Recovers, evaluates, and distributes human eye tissue for the purpose of transplantation, research and education. Maintains detailed records of Eye Bank processes. Assists in hospital development, in-service education programs, community development and education projects, and training of employees.
Recovers, processes and distributes donor eye tissues.
Performs enucleation/excision of donor eye tissue.
Collects and processes donor blood samples for serological testing.
Performs slit lamp and specular microscopic examination of donor tissues, as needed.
Preserves eye tissues in approved media using certified techniques.
Performs donor screening activities as required by standard operating procedures.
Distributes processed eye tissues to transplant, research and educational facilities, as appropriate.
Performs quality improvement activities including donated eye tissue quality evaluation, and laboratory/facility and equipment quality control maintenance.
Maintains all eye donor records and logs, including specific medical records, consent verifications, laboratory tests results and donor acknowledgments.
Communicates with all agencies involved in recovery and processing of eye tissues, including hospitals, organ procurement agencies, tissue procurement agencies, medical examiner offices, medical professionals, funeral and nursing homes.
Maintains laboratory equipment and supply inventories.
Performs related duties, as required.
High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Knowledge of Basic Anatomy and Microbiology, as normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Physiology, or related field, required.
Valid New York State Driver’s license, required.
Access to a motor vehicle and proof of insurance, required.
Excellent communication skills, required.
