Job Description

As an Infection Control Practitioner in Epidemiology, you will act as an infection control resource person involving telephone consults and unit consults.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Demonstrates ongoing knowledge of the CDC classifications of nosocomial infections as defined in the CDC Manual and Epidemiology Department Manual.

  • Presents weekly to the Director of Epidemiology the NHSN data collection work sheets with documented nosocomials.

  • Makes rounds to the patient units each day on duty and inquires about community and nosocomial infections; reviews new antibiotic orders; temperature elevations and new onsets of infections in patients.

  • Checks unit’s Isolation Log Summary and compares with Isolation Notification sent via computer.

  • Checks admission diagnosis on daily basis for Communicable Diseases and reports in-house cases to the appropriate agency as required by law.

  • Reviews microbiology sheets daily on duty and brings potential problems to the Director of Epidemiology. Assures isolation of any patients herein identified as needing precautions as specified in the Isolation Manual. Maintains line listing of selected resistant organisms and presents monthly to director.

  • Notifies problems with isolating patients to management.

  • Reviews “blocked beds” for infection control purposes and changes or discontinues isolation as necessary for cost-effective infection control. Works with Bed Management to arrange cohorts.

  • Reviews patients on Airborne Precaution and maintains “TB Isolation Census” log and delivers to ADN on duty for continuity of care.

  • Monitor for clusters (2) of infections and reports to Director.

  • Teaches infection control one-to-one to all personnel; and keeps knowledge current regarding HIV, Hepatitis B, TB, etc.

  • Maintains working relationship with all outside regulatory/and communicable disease agencies. Monitors and reports communicable diseases as required by the NYC DOH.

  • Acts as a resource person for patients on isolation and their family members. Explains the purpose of isolation and how the family members may protect themselves. Acts as a resource to staff regarding infection control issues.

  • Teaches formal classes in Infection Control topics to nurses, volunteers, etc. when requested.

  • Participates in infection prevention initiatives such as GNYHA CLABS, Cl. difficile project, Hand Hygiene, etc. Collects data, provides education and interventions to sustain outcome.

  • Participates in environmental rounds, as assigned.

  • Participates in Joint Commission Infection Control projects including customer satisfaction surveys, sanitation/isolation audits, etc. as assigned by director.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field, required.

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.

  • Center for Disease Control (CDC) or comparable training program in Infection Control and Epidemiology, required.

  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC), required.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of related clinical experience required (nursing preferred), including two years in a leadership capacity.
